What Are the Signs and Symptoms of Glaucoma?

GlaucomaBlogGlaucoma is an eye disease that damages the nerve fibers in the eye that lead to the brain. Glaucoma may lead to a loss of vision, first in your peripheral vision and later in your central vision. There are three types of glaucoma. The most common is chronic open angle, but there is also normal tension and closed angle. Keep reading to find out the signs and symptoms of glaucoma.

Originally, it was thought that eye pressure caused all of the types of glaucoma. Now we have learned that that is not the cause. Unfortunately, no outward signs or symptoms are present with glaucoma, which is why it is called “the silent thief of sight”.

The best way to find out if you have glaucoma or are at risk for any of the three types of glaucoma is to have a complete eye exam. This exam includes a look at the very back of the eye with a specific scope and a slit lamp biomicroscopy. These will give your eye doctor a perfect angle and look at your eye.

Although regular eye exams are important, it is also important to be aware of any abnormalities in your eyes. Also, if you have a family history of glaucoma, it is important to be examined on a more regular basis. You should also pay more attention to your overall eye health.

If you have not received a complete eye exam in the past year or two, we would suggest giving your eye doctor a call and scheduling an appointment. You can never be too careful with your eyes, they are very important to you!
