Oakwood, GA was founded around 1873 when the railroad started running between Charlotte and Atlanta. It was named Oakwood since wood-burning cars would stop there to pick up oak-wood.
The city was a railroad center and was teeming with travelers. The railroad was great for the economy and resulted in the establishment of many industries in the are. The city is one of growth and continues to thrive.
Oakwood is home to the Oakwood Community Center, a place where one can rent out space, swim in the pool, and take part in cultural activities.
